One sunny afternoon we took a drive to bring some chickens to their forever home. Our van was filled with some rather noisy and incredibly pungent thin little hens who only recently realised that there is life outside of their cramped shed. Over the next few days we introduced them to sunlight and grass and bugs and all the things that you assume they know. And the difference was extraordinary!

At Origin, we believe that every creature deserves the opportunity to live in a humane and dignified way. By rescuing chickens, we provide them with a safe environment, where they can roam freely, stretch their wings, and engage in natural behaviours like foraging, dust bathing, and socialising with other chickens plus goats, ducks and geese.

Chickens play an essential role in our ecosystem by contributing to soil health, reducing food waste, and promoting biodiversity. Their natural foraging habits help control pests, while their manure acts as a rich fertiliser, enhancing the quality of our soil and supporting our crops.

The integration of rescued animals into our model strengthens our commitment to sustainable, closed-loop farming, where nothing is wasted, and everything has value.

Our decision to rescue chickens goes beyond just helping animals in need. It reflects our core values of sustainability, ethical treatment of animals, and community engagement. Every chicken that we rescue is a small victory for humane farming and a step toward creating a more sustainable, compassionate world. It’s a reminder that, as a community, we can make choices that have a positive impact on both animals and the environment.

They all have their own personalities and some are quite bossy even trying to snatch lunch from the volunteers. But they are a delight and bring us a lot of joy. Everyone deserves a second chance.

We invite you to join us on this journey, to be part of a community that values equality, support, and selflessness. Together, we can overcome challenges, create lasting change, and inspire others to do the same in their own communities.
